Scott, Stuart Ross

Stuart Ross Scott was the youngest son of William Walter Scott and Laura Felicia Anley of Kenora, Ontario. William was from Berwick, Finch Township, Ontario and Laura was born in Trenton, Nova Scotia. They were married in Winnipeg in 1891 and they settled in Norman/Rat Portage (later renamed Kenora), where William worked in the lumber industry. They had four sons: Walter Wallace, who died as an infant, Allan Anley, George Richard and Stuart Ross. Stuart was born on 26 April 1897 in the village of Norman (now part of Kenora). He attended school in Kenora and in April 1913 he joined B Company in unit No. 406 (Kenora Schools) of the Cadet Corps.

The war started in August 1914 and George Richard enlisted two months later, at age 20. By the fall of 1915 he was in France. Stuart had just turned 20 when he went to Winnipeg to enlist. He signed up there on 21 May 1917 with the 76th Depot Battery, Canadian Field Artillery. He said he was a student and next of kin was his father in Norman. His medical tells us he had blue eyes and auburn hair and his eyesight was well below average. He was found medically unfit for service. He was not assigned a regimental number and not taken on strength with the 76th Depot Battery.  His brother George was wounded in January 1916 and became ill later that year. He was invalided to Canada in May 1917.

Stuart and his parents moved to British Columbia shortly after the war, settling in Vancouver. When the 1921 census was taken Stuart was the only son still at home. He and his father were both working in the lumber business, William as a manager and Stuart as a sawyer. Stuart was married in Vancouver on 13 February 1926. His wife, Mary Gertrude Ross, was the daughter of Frederick William Ross and Emma Tomlin. Mary was born in Kenora in 1902 and moved to British Columbia with her family during the war.

Stuart and Mary lived in Burnaby and had two children, Laura May (1927) and William Frederick. Stuart worked as a stationary engineer and engine room operator and his son was a mechanic and woodworker. His mother died in Vancouver in 1930, his father in 1941 and his brother Allan in 1942.

Stuart retired in 1962 and passed away in the Burnaby General Hospital on 3 May 1964, at age 67. He’s buried in Valley View Memorial Gardens in Surrey. His brother George died the following year, at age 70, and he’s buried in the Veterans Memorial Park in Surrey. Stuart’s daughter Laura (Mrs. Walter Gordey) and son William both passed on in 2018.
