Chase, Harry Edward

According to his service record, Harry Edward Chase was born on 14 August 1884 in Redditt, a community about 30 kilometres north of Kenora in northwestern Ontario. Living in Duluth, Minnesota, Harry crossed the border into Canada at Fort Frances prior to enlisting in Winnipeg on 20 June 1918. His occupation was given as lumberman and his next of kin as friend Mrs Dolly Anna MacKinnon in Duluth, address the same as Harry’s.

With the 87th draft of the 1st Depot Battalion Manitoba Regiment, Harry became ill in Halifax and was admitted to the nursing station on the 2nd of August. Suffering from pneumonia he was later discharged on the 22nd, staying at the Pine Hill Convalescent Home in Halifax until 16 September. Embarking from Quebec aboard the Huntsend on 26 September, upon arrival in England Harry was admitted to the No 1 Section Hospital in Devonport with influenza and bronchitis. Discharged on 21 November, Harry spent four days at the Granby Billeting Centre, Granby Barracks in Devonport before he was admitted to the No 11 Canadian General Hospital Moore Barracks in Shorncliffe with influenza, discharged on the 17 December.

First with the 11th Reserve Battalion, Harry was transferred to the 18th Reserve Battalion in January of 1919. On 4 June he was admitted to the Canadian Special Hospital at Witley (vdg), discharged on 16 July. With the end of the war, in August Harry returned to Canada aboard the Saxonia. He was discharged from service in Toronto on the 26th. His intended place of residence was given as 913 Park Place in Duluth.

No other records for Harry were found, for either before the war nor after.
