Private Frederick Carl Frederickson was the only son of Carl and Christina Frederickson of Garson, Manitoba. Carl and Christina were from Denmark and Frederick was born in Denmark on 2 October 1889. He had one older sister, Marianna. Carl immigrated to Canada in 1890 and his family followed the next year. Christina and the two children arrived in Halifax from Liverpool on 9 March 1891 on the SS Polynesian, with their destination listed as Rat Portage, Ontario. Carl found work as a sawmill labourer and their youngest daughter, Jennie Christina, was born in Rat Portage (later renamed Kenora) in the spring of 1893.
By the time the 1901 census was taken the family had moved to the Garson/Tyndall area in Manitoba and Carl had taken up farming. Conscription started in Canada in the fall of 1917 and Frederick was called up on 14 June 1918. He was 28 years old, a farmer, 5’9″ and 150 lb and he had a history of rheumatism. He was assigned to the 1st Depot Battalion, Manitoba Regiment. He was given conditional leave starting on 2 August and leave without pay for all of November. He rejoined his unit on 1 December and he was discharged on 10 December, due to being in a medical category lower than B, meaning he was not fit for overseas service.
Frederick returned to Garson and farmed there for many years. He was also involved in the lumber industry and operated a lime kiln on his property. His mother passed away in 1931 and his father in 1932. In his later years Frederick lived in a personal care home in Selkirk. He passed away at the Selkirk General Hospital on 27 May 1983, at age 93. He was predeceased by both of his sisters and survived by several nieces and nephews. He is buried, along with his parents, in the Tyndall Community Cemetery.
