Green, James Richard

James Richard Green was born on 22 January 1899 in Buffalo, New York. His parents were James Gordon Green and Nora Ellen Newhouse. Siblings included Marie (b. 1896), Genevive (b. 1902), John (b. 1907), Joseph Edward (b. 1909) and Lenore (b. 1917).

The Green family came to Kenora in 1904 and James Sr. worked as a locomotive engineer. In the 1911 Canadian Census they are found living at 416 3rd St. N.

James Richard began working for the CPR as a wiper in 1915.

On 17 February 1916 he enlisted in the 94th Battalion in Kenora.  He embarked with the 94th Battalion from Halifax on 28 Jun 1916 aboard the S.S. Olympic.  Once overseas he was transferred to the 17th Reserve Battalion. On 22 September 1916 James joined the 16th Battalion and proceeded to France where he joined his unit in the field on the 9th of October. While at Arras France in February of 1917 James became ill with influenza and was hospitalized. He was invalided to England and received treatment until 27 April 1917. James remained in England with the 14th reserve battalion and was again hospitalized at Moore Barracks from 23 July 1917 to 6 August 1917.  He returned to France and the 16th Battalion on 20 March 1918. In October of 1918 he was tried and convicted of stealing an 80 pound sack of sugar from the Quarter Masters stores of the Canadian Rest Camp. James was sentenced to one year I.H.L. On 10 October 1918 he was admitted to Military Prison in Havre. While there he suffered another bout of influenza. In April of 1919 James was transferred to England and struck off strength to the Manitoba Regimental Depot to undergo the remainder of his sentence. Before he returned to Canada in July of 1919 James’ sentence was remitted. He arrived in Montreal on 4 August 1919 and received his official discharge due to demobilization in Winnipeg on the 11th of August.

Upon his return to Kenora, James returned to employment on the CPR and was promoted to fireman in 1920. On 17 December 1924 he married Mary Gallagher in Winnipeg, Manitoba.   They had two sons, James and John. James was promoted to engineer on the CPR in 1943 and held that position until he retired on 01 February 1964.

James died on 19 June 1968 and is buried in the Roman Catholic section of Lake of the Woods Cemetery, Kenora, Ontario.  His parents, wife, brother John and sister Marie (Mrs. Leo Getty Doran) are also buried in this cemetery.
