According to his recruitment papers Joseph Hector Lapierre was born on 16 June 1897 in Sault St-Lin, Quebec. The son of Onesime and Virginie (née Martel) Lapierre (Marsan dit Lapierre), Hector was baptized on 20 June in St-Lin, parents listed as farmers from nearby St-Julienne. Onesime and Virginie married on 17 December 1880 in St-Esprit and gave birth to children Hermas (1881), Cordelia (1883), Onesime (1884), Albina (1885-1903), Joseph (1887-1905), Oscar (1889), Albert (1891-1894), Marie Louise (1892-1897), Albert (1895), Hector, and Georges (1903). The 1901 and 1911 censuses listed the family in the parish of St-Julienne and over the years the surname was given interchangeably as Lapierre, Marsan dit Lapierre, and Marsan.
With the onset of conscription in the latter part of the war, Hector signed his recruitment papers in Winnipeg on 23 November 1917. At the time he was living in Norman, Ontario, a village just west of Kenora. His occupation was given as labourer although elsewhere in his service record it was given as watchman at a steamboat works. He gave his father in Sault St-Lin as next of kin.
With a draft of the 1st Depot Battalion Manitoba Regiment, Hector arrived in England aboard the Missanabie on 3 April 1918. First posted to the 11th Reserve Battalion, in September he was struck off strength to the 22nd Battalion, arriving at the unit on the 12th. On 11 November he was transferred to the 16th Battalion, joining the unit on the 17th. With the end of the war Hector returned to England in mid March of 1919 and embarked for Canada aboard the Carmania on 10 April.
Hector was discharged from service on 21 April 1919 in Montreal. His intended residence was given as Sault St-Lin but a notation in his service record indicated that he ended up in Espanola, Ontario a short time later. Further trace of Hector was not found. His mother Virginie died in 1934 and his father Onesime in 1935, both in St-Julienne, Quebec.
