John Daniel McLeod, more commonly known as Bud, was born on 29 August 1890 in Quincy, Massachusetts, date confirmed by his Massachusetts birth record. His parents John and Christina McLeod were originally from Prince Edward Island but had moved to Quincy where John Sr found employment as a granite polisher. The family moved to Hamilton, Ontario in 1898. Bud’s siblings were Daniel Edward (killed in action on 1 December 1916 in France), Alexander, (enlisted in Quincy, and served during the Great War), Catherine (McLeod) Post, Harold who died at age 5, and Harold born the same year as his namesake’s death.
John Daniel McLeod signed his recruitment papers in Niagara on the Lake, Ontario on 6 June 1918 although he had completed his medical the previous fall. Living in Hamilton and working as an Assistant Superintendent for Prudential Insurance, he gave his mother Christina as next of kin. He gave his date of birth as 28 August 1890. Bud spent most of June hospitalized and then was struck off away on leave on July 2nd. On 30 September 1918 he was struck off strength on return to the Registrar, with final discharge on November 18th.
Bud eventually moved to Keewatin, Ontario to work at the Lake of the Woods Milling Company as a cereal chemist. He married Mary ‘Polly’ McKie on 24 April 1926 in Keewatin. They had two children, Daniel and Allan. Bud had a keen interest in sports, actively participating in baseball and curling. Bud died on 12 August 1952 and is interred in the Lake of the Woods Cemetery, Kenora. His gravemarker gives the year of birth as 1891. Polly died in 1979 and is interred beside him.
