Joseph was single, living in the Kenora area and working as a lumberman when he enlisted. He joined the 1st Depot Battalion, Manitoba Regiment and he was sent overseas with the 134th Draft, embarking from Montreal on 30 August 1918 on the SS Saturnia and arriving in Liverpool on 16 September. The following day he was attached to the 11th Reserve Battalion at Seaford.
The Armistice was signed on 11 November and a week later Joseph was sent to the Canadian Training School at Bexhill, where he spent three weeks. On 20 January 1919 he was transferred to the 18th Reserve Battalion and he served with them for another five months. He embarked for Canada from Southampton on 14 June on the HMT Aquitania, arriving in Halifax six days later, and he was discharged on demobilization on 24 June in Winnipeg.
