According to his attestation papers, Peter Sheppard was born on 22 June 1886 in Glasgow, Scotland. A birth record was not found and given his gray hair he was likely older than stated. When he attested with the 190th Battalion on 21 July 1916 in Winnipeg, Peter had been living in Kenora, Ontario and working as a labourer. He gave his mother Elizabeth Sheppard in Paisley, Scotland as next of kin. Although he had passed his medical examination, according to his service record Peter had had his leg crushed by falling timber in 1905 in Michigan. As a result of the accident his left leg was deformed and he was unable to do route marches. Peter was discharged as medically unfit on 23 January 1917 in Winnipeg, rank of Private. As he was a farmer it was thought that he ‘would be of more service tilling the soil.’ His conduct and character while in service were described as good.
Little is known about Peter’s life after the war. A 1962 Voters list for Winnipeg showed him living in the Convalescent Home on Jessie Street. Peter died on 1 October 1964 at the home and is interred in a military plot in Brookside Cemetery in Winnipeg.
