Joseph Erwin Shouldice was born on 28 April 1897 in Rat Portage (later renamed Kenora), Ontario. His father Joseph Shouldice was from the Gatineau River/Wakefield area of Quebec and had come west to Winnipeg in 1877 to work on CPR construction. His mother Christina Sutherland was from West River, Pictou County, Nova Scotia. The couple married on 21 May 1894 in Winnipeg and then settled in Rat Portage as Joseph became a captain/operator of steamboats on Lake of the Woods. Other children born to the couple were Arthur, James, and Elizabeth Minnie.
A fisherman by trade, Joseph Shouldice signed his recruitment papers in Port Arthur, Ontario on 3 May 1918, given a conditional leave on the 27th until further orders. On 10 January 1919 he was struck off strength in Port Arthur due to demobilization and discharged on the 14th.
After the war Joseph returned to Kenora and on 19 November 1927 he married Dorothy Ann Miller, daughter of Frank and Catherine (née Smith) Miller of Kenora. Together the couple had 4 children, 3 boys and a girl. During WW2 he served overseas from 1940 to 1945 with the Royal Canadian Engineers. He retired in 1954.
Joseph’s parents had moved to Winnipeg in retirement. His mother passed away in 1937 and his father in 1938. Both are interred in Brookside Cemetery. Joseph’s brothers Arthur and James served with the 52nd Battalion and returned safely from the war, although Arthur suffered poor health for the remainder of his life. Arthur passed away in a military hospital in Toronto on 1 February 1936, leaving behind a wife and three children. Joseph’s brother James settled in Winnipeg after the war and died in 1955. He is interred in the military section of Brookside Cemetery.
Joseph died in Deer Lodge Hospital in Winnipeg on 7 July 1971 and is interred in the military section of Lake of the Woods Cemetery in Kenora.
