According to his service file Private Michael Walch was born on 22 March 1878 in Kentville (possibly Kemptville), Ontario. He was unmarried, a labourer, his address was Fort William, Ontario and next of kin was his brother John Walch, also in Fort William. It’s possible their surname was actually Welsh, Walsh or Welch.
Michael enlisted with the 94th Battalion in Kenora, Ontario on 19 November 1915. He was Roman Catholic, 5’9″ with blue eyes and brown hair and he was found fit for overseas service. His terms of service were for ‘Duration of war.’
The Kenora recruits were sent to Port Arthur on 25 May 1916, to train with the rest of the unit. Michael may have been sent there earlier, in December 1915. However, he was absent without leave since 2 May 1916. He was struck off strength as a deserter effective 2 May.
Nothing further is known about Michael.
