Michael Zaremba was born on the 21 May 1894 in Russia.
By 14 July 1915 when he enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force for service in WW1, he was living in Montreal, Quebec and had the occupation of labourer. He joined the 41st Battalion and arrived in England on 28 October 1915. The following June (1916) Michael was transferred to the 2nd Pioneer Battalion and sent to France. The Pioneer Battalions were responsible for building the intricate trenches of WW1. They followed close behind the expeditionary forces often having to down tools to fight off counter-attacks. Michael received a Good Conduct Badge on 30 July 1917. In December of 1917 he was admitted to the Canadian Military Hospital while he was on leave in England for treatment of venereal disease. Michael was transferred to the 4th Reserve Battalion in February 1918 and then the Canadian Railway Troops in March 1918. In April of 1918 he was sent back to France with the 8th Canadian Railway Troops and served there until returning to England on 30 January 1919 at which time he was placed with the Canadian Railway Troop depot to prepare for demobilization. Michael spent one week in Moore Barracks Hospital, Shorncliffe at the end of February 1919. He was struck off strength and returned to Canada in July of 1919. His official discharge due to demobilization was on 11 July 1919 in Montreal.
At some point, Michael moved to Kenora, Ontario. He was retired and living in Laclu, a rural area outside Kenora, in 1962.
Michael Zaremba died on 11 July 1979 in Kenora. He is buried in Lake of the Woods Cemetery in Kenora.
