Hendy, John Thomas
John Thomas Hendy (known as Jack Hendy) was born on 30 January 1900 in Grays, Essex, England. His parents were James Hendy and Eliza King. Siblings included Arthur Franklin (1881-1953), Sissy Eliza (1883-1959), Edith (1887-1901), Kate Isabel (1889-1986), Rose Eleanor (1893-1986), Nellie (1895-1998), William (1898-1899), and Mabel Florence (1901-c.1990).
Just after Jack turned 18 he enlisted with the 18th Battalion London Regiment on 04 February 1918. His trade at the time was ‘carman’ and he listed his mother of 71 Boleyn Rd., East Ham as his next of kin. His training began and in July of 1918 he was transferred to the Royal Fusiliers. On 29 November 1918 he was posted to the Royal Army Service Corps with the rank of Private and the service number T/446840. Jack served in England until his discharge of 07 April 1920. At that time his rank was Driver.
Jack married Winnifred Victoria Allen in 1922 in West Ham, Essex. In August of that year Jack and Winnifred immigrated to Canada aboard the S.S. Milita. They made their way to Keewatin, Ontario where Winnifred’s sister and brother-in-law (Constance and Emil Lind) were living. Their passage had been paid for by Sophie Creasor, another of Winnifred’s sisters, who was also residing in Keewatin. When they first arrived they lived at the Russell House and then rented a house in the Rideout area of Kenora. Jack had been taking a carpenter’s apprenticeship in England and he brought his tool box with him. He worked on the construction of the T. Eaton building in Winnipeg and the paper mill in Kenora. In 1925 Jack started working as a carpenter for the Town of Kenora. He and Winnifred had three children: Ivy Elizabeth, Margaret and John William (Jack Jr.). In 1935 they moved to the Lakeside area of Kenora. They belonged to the First Presbyterian Church and Jack was a member of the Kenora Legion. Jack retired in 1965 as public works foreman for the Town of Kenora. In 1975 Jack and Winnifred took a trip back to England to visit family for the first time in fifty-three years.
Predeceased by his wife, Winnifred, in 1979 Jack Hendy Sr. passed away on 15 October 1981 in Kenora. They are buried in Lake of the Woods Cemetery, Kenora.
