Fahey, Edward William
Edward William Fahey was born on 24 May 1889 in the Bass River area of Weldford, Kent in New Brunswick where his family farmed. His parents, both from New Brunswick, were John Fahey and Estella Johnston. Children born to the couple were Jane (1886), Gordon (1888-1888), Edward, Mary Winnifred (1891), Lillian Emeline (1894), Catherine Ann (1896), John Ernest (1897), Estella Sarah (1899), Viola Edna (1902), Lucinda (Linda) (1904), and Loretta Blanche (1907).
With the onset of conscription during the latter part of the war, drafted under the Military Service Act of 1917 Edward was called up for service on 22 June 1918 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Living in the Oakville area of Manitoba, his occupation was given as farmer and his father John in New Brunswick as next of kin. His date and place of birth was given as 24 May 1899 in Harcourt, New Brunswick. As a Private with the 81st Draft of the 1st Depot Battalion, Manitoba Regiment, Edward arrived in England aboard the Nellore on 15 August 1918. First posted to the 11th Reserve Battalion, he was transferred to the 18th Reserve in January of 1919. By the end of the month Edward had transferred to the Canadian Army Medical Corps and posted at the 10th Canadian General Hospital at Brighton. In mid March he was taken on strength with the 12th Canadian General Hospital at Bramshott. Edward arrived back in Canada on 24 August 1919 aboard the Saxonia and was discharged from service on demobilization in Winnipeg on the 27th, rank of Private.
Also drafted under the Military Service Act, Edward’s brother John was called up for service in May of 1918 and served in Canada with the 1st Depot Battalion, New Brunswick Regiment.
At the time of the 1921 Canada census, Edward and his brother John were living in Pellatt on the outskirts of Kenora in northwestern Ontario, occupation for both given as labourers. Further trace of Edward could not be confirmed.
Edward’s mother Estella died in 1913 and father John in 1926 who along with their infant son Gordon are interred in the Saint Bartholomew Cemetery in Bass River, New Brunswick. His siblings Jane (James) McDermott died in 1937 in Rexton, New Brunswick, Lillian (Thomas) Roach in 1947 in Weldford, New Brunswick, Catherine in 1922 in Main River, New Brunswick, John in 1969 in River Rouge, Michigan, Mary McGillivray in 1975 in Massachusetts, Linda (Hersey) Patterson in 1976 in New Brunswick, Estella (George) McGillivray in 1983 in Massachusetts, Loretta in 1988 in Massachusetts, and Viola (Robert) McPherson in 1989 in New Brunswick.
