Reginald Donald MacDonell enlisted with the 94th Battalion on 5 November 1915 in Kenora, Ontario, rank of Private. His date and place of birth was given as 3 November 1871 in Cornwall, Ontario, and his next of kin as Mrs. John MacDonell in Toronto. Single, at the time of his enlistment Reginald was working as a timber scaler. He was discharged from service on 9 December 1915 as not likely to become and efficient soldier.
Birth and census records could not be found for Reginald both before and after the war. On 23 February 1892, in Montreal, a Reginald Donald MacDonell married Sarah Pauline Malham. Born in England in 1871, Sarah had arrived in Quebec, Canada on 28 June 1887, on the passenger list as a domestic on her way to Montreal. The marriage record gave Reginald’s parents as John MacDonell and Isabella McLean. Further trace of the couple or parents could not be found.
