Sweet, Francis Lloyd

Frank Lloyd Sweet was born 01 January 1895 in Keewatin, Ontario.   His parents were Samuel Charles Sweet and Margaret Anne Christie.   His siblings included Margaret (1890-1890), Sarah Jane (1901-1901), Alexander Charles, Samuel Rayburn, Mary Beatrice, Helen, Marjorie Elizabeth, Robert, Fred, Thomas Edwin and James Christie.

Frank received his education in Keewatin schools and started employment with the CPR as a car checker in Keewatin on 19 March 1912.

On 01 October 1916 Frank enlisted in the Depot Squadron of Lord Strathcona’s Horse (Royal Canadians) at Camp Hughes, Manitoba.  He was a clerk for the CPR at the time. His unit traveled to England aboard the S.S. Metagama arriving on 28 October 1916. In March of 1917 Frank was transferred to the Canadian Reserve Cavalry Regiment and then to the the Canadian Machine Gun Depot on 2 May 1917. He was appointed Acting Lance Corporal until 22 August 1917 when he left for France. Frank joined his unit in the field on 12 September 1917. On 1 June 1918 he was posted to the Canadian Cavalry Brigade, Machine Gun Squadron. Frank was promoted to Corporal at the end of August 1918. He had two weeks leave to the United Kingdom and spent 44 days in hospital being treated for venereal disease at Camiers upon his return. On 16 April 1919 Frank proceeded to England and the next month was struck off strength for his return to Canada.  He received his official discharge due to demobilization on 2 June 1919 in Winnipeg. After this he returned to Keewatin and resumed working for the CPR.

On 05 June 1926 Frank married Muriel Lauretta Sheridan at Ingolf, a small community in Ontario near the Manitoba border.  They had two children; daughter Winona and son Edwin.

Frank became the Assistant Agent at the CPR station in Keewatin on 24 June 1946, a position he held until he retired from the railway on 01 May 1956. After this he was employed by the Department of Lands and Forests for three years.

Frank was an avid curling and baseball fan and enjoyed gardening.   He belonged to the United Church, The Masons and the Royal Canadian Legion.

Frank died on 15 April 1965 in Brighton, Ontario.   He is buried in Lake of the Woods Cemetery in Kenora, Ontario.

His war service is commemorated on the Town of Keewatin Plaque, formerly located in the Keewatin Legion.   He received the Coronation Medal from the King on 12 May 1937.

Frank’s brother, Samuel Rayburn Sweet, also served in WW1.
