Goodman, Gudmundur Fridjon
Gudmundur Fridjon Gudmundson was born on 29 August 1892 in Iceland. Along with his parents Thorlakur and Anna Gudmundson and older siblings Helga and David, he immigrated to Canada in1893. The family settled in the South Cypress area of southern Manitoba where they farmed. Along the way the children adopted the surname of Goodman, with Gudmunder using the forename of Fred. By the time of the 1911 census both David and Fred were working on nearby farms but by the 1916 census they were living with their parents and sister on Christie Street in South Cypress (Glenboro). Thorlakur was listed as a retired farmer, Helga as a waitress, David as a clerk in a jewelry store, and Fred as a clerk in a hardware store.
With the onset of conscription in the latter part of the war, Fred had his medical examination on 5 November 1917 in Treherne, Manitoba. Called up on 12 January 1918, he gave his occupation as clerk and father back in Glenboro as next of kin. As a Private he first served with the A Company of the Special Services unit of the 1st Depot Battalion Manitoba Regiment. He later was transferred to the D Company of the 5th Battalion Canadian Garrison Regiment in Quebec and was promoted to Lance Corporal. With the end of the war Fred was discharged from service on 21 December 1918 in Quebec. He is commemorated for his service on the Glenboro and District WW1 Roll of Honour.
Fred returned to the Glenboro area where he married Gudrun Christie on 1 February 1921 in South Cypress. The daughter of Icelandic immigrants Stefan and Matthildur Christie, Gudrun was born on 9 September 1896 in the nearby municipality of Argle where the family farmed. Fred and Gudrun farmed in the Glenboro district, giving birth to daughter Matthildur (Mattie) in 1928. After retiring in 1960 Fred and Gudrun moved to Kenora, Ontario to live with Mattie and her husband Dr Earl Bryngleson and family.
Fred died on 11 January 1962 in St Joseph’s Hospital in Kenora. He was predeceased by his mother Anna in 1929, his father Thorlakur in 1936 and his brother David in 1961. Gudrun died on 7 January 1973 in Kenora. His sister Helga never married and died in 1977 and daughter Mattie in 2011, both in Winnipeg. Along with his parents and sister Helga, Fred and Gudrun are interred in the Grund Cemetery near Glenboro in Manitoba.
