Andrew John Victor Anderson was born on 15 April 1896 in Rat Portage (Kenora), Ontario. He was the youngest child of Anders (Andrew) Anderson and Carolina Samuelsdotter Larsen. Siblings included: Charles Edward (1885-1956), Selma (1888-1888), Albert James (1890-1962), Ethel (1892-1973), and Alan Herbert Olaves (1894-1955). Andrew’s father died in 1899 and the family moved to Selkirk, Manitoba to live with his parents Jonas and Agnes Anderson. In 1901 mother Carolina married Charles Mattson. The 1911 Canadian Census shows Andrew still living with his mother, step-father, siblings – Albert, Ethel and Alan, and half sisters Marianda (b. 1903) and Mathilda (b. 1904) in Selkirk.
Andrew was conscripted into service with the Canadian Expeditionary Force on 09 January 1918. At the time he was single and working as a farmer in Poplar Park, Manitoba. Before being shipped overseas Andrew spent 25 days in hospital with diphtheria. In June of 1918 he sailed to England on the S. S. Pannonia. Upon his arrival he was placed in the 18th Reserve Battalion. In September 1918 Andrew was transferred to the 78th Battalion. He joined his unit in France on 02 October 1918. Two weeks later he was attached to the 12th Brigade as a runner. Andrew returned to Canada at the end of May 1919 and received his official discharge due to demobilization on 12 June 1919.
After the war Andrew settled in Manitoba and married Katherine (Kate) Pruden in 1936. They had one known child, daughter Caroline. He died on 17 April 1977 in Winnipeg and is buried in Elmwood Cemetery. His gravemarker photograph is courtesy of Dave and Janice, findagrave.com.
