Aube, Hermidas

Hermidas Aube was born on 12 May 1866 in St. Jerome, Quebec to Vincent and Margaret Aube.  He came west as a young man and worked as a labourer and a miner. By 1901 he was living in Rat Portage (Kenora) Ontario with a wife and children.  He worked at the Sultana Mine and also with the Keewatin Lumber Company.

Hermidas married Clara Ducharme in Rat Portage on 08 January 1900.   She had three children Alphonse, Delcie (Spencer) and Phil from a previous marriage to Alfred Miault.   Hermidas and Clara had five more children – Osana (Thomas), Beatrice (Mortenson), Laura (McLay), Phil and Ovide.

At age forty-nine, on 25 November 1915, Hermidas enlisted with the 94th battalion in Kenora.  On his attestation papers his name is listed as Hormisdas Obey.  The unit trained in town until May of 1916 when it went to Port Arthur and joined the other recruits for the 94th battalion. Their journey overseas began when they left Halifax aboard the S.S. Olympic on 28 June 1916. Once in England, Hermidas was transferred to the 32nd Reserve Battalion, then the Canadian Casualty Assembly Centre and finally to the Canadian Training Brigade.   He was returned to Canada   on 31 October 1916 when it was discovered he was over age for service.

Once back in Kenora, Hermidas got employment at the Lake of the Woods Milling Company in nearby Keewatin.   He retired in 1930.

Hermidas died on 03 August 1940 and is buried in the Roman Catholic section of the Lake of the Woods Cemetery, Kenora.
