Beaudin, Stanislas

Wenceslas Baudin was born on 28 September 1863 in Grand Rivière, Gaspé, Quebec. Over the years he went by both Wenceslas and Stanislas and the surname was spelled as Baudin and Beaudin, the latter in later years. His parents were Fidele Baudin and Elizabeth Bisson who had married on 3 December 1857 in Grand Rivière. Stanislas had three older siblings, Mathias, Benoni, and Alphonsine, and two younger siblings, Joseph and Flore Anne. It appears that his mother died around 1870-72, with Fidele marrying Marie Marguerite Louise Bisson. Children born to this couple were Joseph Pierre, Fidele, Marie, Emma, and Esther.

Stanislas lived in Grand Rivière with his family until at least the 1891 census, working as a journalier (daily labourer). By 1900 he had moved to Rat Portage (later renamed Kenora) in northwestern Ontario. On 17 April 1900, in Rat Portage, Stanislas married Marie Eulalie Perron. Born in 1871 in St Anaclet, Rimouski, Québec, Marie was the daughter of Israel and Marie (née Hepelle) Perron and had moved to the Rat Portage area with her parents and some of her siblings at some point before the 1891 census.

Children born to Stanislas and Marie in Rat Portage were Joseph Stanislas Fidele (1902), Joseph Louis Israel (1904), Joseph Pierre Francois (1906-1907), Pierre Joseph Adjutor Janvier (1910-1910), and Marie Anna Genevieve Louise (1915-1917). Sadly, only Fidele and Louis survived infancy/early childhood.

Stanislas enlisted with the 233rd Battalion (Canadiens-Français du Nord-Ouest) in Winnipeg on 14 September 1916. His occupation was given as labourer and his wife Marie in Kenora (St Joseph Hospital) as next of kin. Likely to appear younger, his date of birth was given as 12 October 1872. Elsewhere in his record his year of birth was corrected. While training in Edmonton, Stanislas was discharged from service as medically unfit (overage) on 9 January 1917.

Stanislas returned to Kenora where sadly his wife Marie died on 16 May 1920, having been an invalid for a number of years. By the 1921 census Stanislas was working as a labourer and lodging with the Michael and Bridget Sweeney family on Alexander Avenue in Winnipeg.

Stanislas (name given as Wenceslas on his death record) died on 10 March 1930 in Winnipeg. His son Fidele married Marie Philomene Desjarlais and the couple gave birth to at least eight children. Fidele died in 1974 in Regina, Saskatchewan. Stanislas’ son Louis married Viola May Murtha and died in 1992 in Chemainus, British Columbia. Stanislas is interred in St Mary’s Cemetery in Winnipeg, his grave unmarked.
