Clouatre, Stanislas Aurele

Stanislas Aurele Clouatre was born on 27 September 1894 in Val-Racine, Quebec. His parents Emilien Clouatre and Marie Grenier had married on 5 June 1892 in nearby Notre-Dame-des-Bois. The couple farmed in the Val-Racine area for a number of years, giving birth to children Ozilda (1893-1965), Stanislas, Rose Delima ((1895-1978), Thomas (1897-1965), Aldea (1899-1916), Wilfred (1901-1940), and Delvina (1904-1966). By the time of the birth of their last child Alfred in 1906, the family had moved to Fabre to farm, a rural community about 135 kilometres northwest of North Bay, Ontario on the Quebec side of border. At the time of the 1911 census Marie was listed as a widow. She later married Napoleon Parent in 1915 in Fabre.

At some point after the 1911 census Stanislas moved to Kenora, Ontario where he went by the aliases of Fred Derocher and Albert Durocher. With the onset of conscription in the latter part of the war, he (Albert Durocher) had his medical examination on 6 November 1917 in Kenora. A short time later, on 1 December 1917, he married Delia Halley, name given as Fred Derocher on the marriage record. Born in 1900 in Minnesota, Delia was the daughter of Louie Halley and Anna Leroux. The marriage record noted that the groom was from Fabre, Quebec and his mother’s name was Marie Grenier.

Using the name of Albert Durocher, Stanislas was called up for service on 10 January 1918 in Port Arthur, Ontario. He was assigned to the 1st Depot Battalion, Manitoba Regiment with rank of Private. His date and place of birth was given as 25 September 1895 in Monach County, Quebec, occupation as farmer, and his next of kin as his wife Delia in Kenora. Elsewhere in his record his mother’s name was given as Marie Grenier, also noted that his father had passed away. “Albert” spent most of 1918 hospitalized in Port Arthur and Winnipeg (pre-existing vdg) and was discharged from service on 16 December 1918 in Winnipeg by reason of demobilization and being a married man.

Living in Fabre, Stanislas’ brother Thomas was called up for service in August of 1918. Assigned to the 2nd Depot Battalion, Eastern Ontario Regiment with rank of Private, he was found to be underweight and underdeveloped. He was discharged from service that December.

With the name of Fred Derocher, Stanislas and Delia were found farming in Jaffray Melick on the outskirts of Kenora at the time of the 1921 census. They had given birth to two sons, Joseph Alfred in 1918 and Paul Joseph in 1919. Sadly Paul died in 1922 and is interred in the Roman Catholic section of the Lake of the Woods Cemetery.

By 1925 Stanislas and Delia had moved to Fabre, giving birth to son Paul Laurent that year followed by daughter Adlea in 1935. Both baptism records gave their parents’ names as Stanislas Clouatre and Delia Halley. While in Fabre Stanislas worked as an artisan and farmer. A 1940 Voters list placed the family in nearby Point Martel while a 1949 list in Sturgeon Falls, Ontario.

It is not known if Stanislas died or if the couple separated but by 1958 Delia was living with Jack Hilton in Wildwood Heights near Powell River in British Columbia. Delia had assumed the surname of Hilton although a marriage record was not found for the couple. Predeceased by her young son in Kenora and by her son Paul in 1975 in Vancouver, Delia died on 30 December 1991 in Powell River. With her surname given as Hilton on her death record, she was listed as the widow of Stanley Clouatre. Their son Alfred died the next year in Powell River, with informant on his death record given as his sister Aldea (Alwyn) Chasteney of Fanny River, BC.
