Dion, Arthur
Arthur Dion was born on 29 November 1893 in Rat Portage (now Kenora), Ontario. His parents were Elziard Dion and Clara Brissette who had married in Rat Portage in 1891. Siblings included Edward, William, Rose Delima, Irene, and Phillip. The family was living in Keewatin at the time of the 1901 census and in Redditt when the 1911 census was taken. By 1916 they had moved to St. Boniface, Manitoba. About 1906 Arthur injured his left forearm when it got caught in a sawmill. This left him with limited use of his left hand.
Arthur was working as a railway clerk when he enlisted with the 200th Battalion for overseas service during WW1 on 26 May 1916 in Winnipeg. His older brother Edward had signed up the year before and his younger brother, William, was already enlisted with the 200th Battalion. They trained at Camp Hughes. Arthur sailed from Halifax for England aboard the Megantic and arrived in Liverpool on 14 May 1917. Upon his arrival he was transferred to the 11th Reserve Battalion until being posted to the Manitoba Regimental Depot on 12 June 1917. A medical report dated 27 June 1917 indicates that Arthur was found permanently unfit for military service due to the loss of function in the fingers of his left hand (from his injury sustained prior to enlisting). He returned to Canada in August of 1917 and received his official discharge on 18 September 1917. His service record shows his last known address was Redditt, Ontario (a small railway hamlet north of Kenora).
Arthur married Bridget (Daisy) McKenna on 20 June 1918 in Winnipeg. They had three children: Ernest (born 1920), Kathleen Pearl (born 1921) and Arthur (born 1922). The photo on the left shows Daisy with Pearl, Ernie and Arthur. The 1921 Canadian census lists the family living in Winnipeg and Arthur working in a factory.
In 1923 the Dion family moved to the United States. The 1930 and 1940 US censuses show them living in Pontiac, Michigan where Arthur had found employment as a laborer in an automobile factory (the Pontiac Motor Plant).
Arthur Dion died on 19 November 1976 in Rochester, Michigan. He is buried in Mount Hope Cemetery, Pontiac, Michigan.
