Edward Dion was born on 01 September 1892 in Rat Portage (now Kenora), Ontario. His parents were Elziard Dion and Clara Bissette who had married in Rat Portage in 1891. Siblings included Arthur, William, Rose Delima, Irene, and Phillip. The family was living in Keewatin at the time of the 1901 census and in Redditt when the 1911 census was taken. By 1916 they had moved to St. Boniface, Manitoba.
Edward was working as a fireman on the railroad when he enlisted on 05 May 1916 in Winnipeg with the 43rd Battalion for overseas service in WW1. A month later he sailed to England aboard the Grampian. He was taken on strength by the 16th Battalion and sent to France on 17 July 1915. Edward served with the 16th Battalion until April of 1918. During that time he suffered a bout of influenza (July 1915), tonsillitis (December 1915), shrapnel wound to his hand (June 1916), an ulcer on his eye (August 1916), furunculosis (recurring boils on neck and shoulders from November 1917 to January 1918), and fever of unknown origin (February 1918). He was promoted to the rank of Corporal on 20 August 1917 but reverted back to ranks at his own request on 09 April 1918. At that time he transferred to the 85th Canadian Engineer Crew Company. Edward was struck off strength to the Canadian Rail Transport Depot on 18 April 1919 on proceeding to England. He returned to Canada in May 1919 and received his official discharge due to demobilization on 30 May 1919 in Winnipeg.
The 1921 Canadian Census shows Edward living with his parents and youngest brother, Philip, in Crystal City, Manitoba.
There is record of an Edward Dion marrying Clotilda Ratchford on 29 September 1925 in Manitou, Manitoba, but it is not confirmed that this is the Edward Dion of this article. Further details of his life are not known at this time.
His brothers Arthur and William also served in WW1.
