Private John Doyle enlisted in Kenora, Ontario on 19 November 1915, signing up with the 94th Overseas Battalion. According to his attestation he was born on 26 February 1892 in Ottawa and he had a brother Andrew Doyle who was living in Ottawa and named as his next of kin. John was 5’6″ with brown eyes and black hair and his medical found him fit for overseas service. He gave his present address as Ottawa and his occupation as labourer.
The 94th Battalion was organized and headquartered in Port Arthur. About a month after enlisting John transferred to Company A, which was based in Port Arthur. He trained with them over the winter and the rest of the Kenora recruits arrived in Port Arthur in the spring.
On 2 June 1916 John transferred to the 207th Battalion, which had been organized just a few months earlier in his hometown of Ottawa. In August he was listed as absent without leave. He was officially discharged in Ottawa on 6 September 1916 ‘in consequence of being illegally absent.’ His intended place of residence was listed as Ottawa. Nothing further is known about John and his name may have been an alias.
