Private Charles William Garner enlisted in Kenora, Ontario on 19 May 1915. His gave his birth date as 31 July 1875 in Flore, Northamptonshire, England and next of kin as Clark Garner of Northampton, Northamptonshire. His relationship to Clark was not stated. Charles said he had served for twelve years in the Northamptonshire Regiment, Royal Garrison Artillery. He was a shoemaker by trade and he was 5’7″ with hazel eyes and reddish brown hair.
Charles joined the 52nd (New Ontario) Battalion, which was being recruited in northwestern Ontario, including the town of Kenora. In June the men were sent to Port Arthur for further training. On 15 July, after two months of service, Charles was struck off strength in Port Arthur as a deserter. So far, no other record of Charles has been found either before or after the war and his name may have been an alias.
