Hager, Victor Emanuel
Viktor Emanuel Häger was born on 25 September 1886 in Sundsvall, Västernorrland, Sweden. His father August Häger was from Färglanda in Г„lvsborg while his mother Brita Christina Johanna Hansson was born in Sundsvall although her parents were from Jämtland. The couple had married 26 December 1878 in Sundsvall. As was common for the time, August and Brita had two children at the time of the marriage, Johan (1876-1879) and Anny Caterina Sofia (1878). Other children born to the family were Christina Charlotta (1880), Hildur Victoria (1883), Johan Albin (1889), Helga Eugenia (1891), and Svea Otillia (1894). For the most part the family lived in Sundsvall where August found work as an arbetare (worker or labourer) except for a time when they lived in nearby SelГҐnger where they were for Hildur’s birth.
August left Sundsvall in late January of 1895 on the first step of immigration to Canada. Brita and children Victor, Emanuel (likely Johan Albin), Jenny (Helga Eugenia) and Svea were found on the passenger list of the Dominion that left Liverpool, England for Canada on 31 August 1899. The family homesteaded in Ostersund in the township of Pellatt in northwestern Ontario near Kenora.
Victor signed his recruitment papers on 11 March 1918 with the 1st Depot Battalion Manitoba Regiment in Port Arthur, Ontario. He had had his medical examination the previous November in Kenora. He gave his occupation as farmer and his father as next of kin. As a Private with the 4th Draft of the 1st Depot Battalion Manitoba Regiment, he embarked from Halifax aboard the SS Tunisian on 08 April 1918.
Once in England Victor was taken on strength with the 18th Reserve Battalion, and by mid August arrived in France to serve with the 52nd Battalion. With the end of the war Victor returned to England in mid February of 1919, admitted to the No 12 Canadian General Hospital at Bramshott on the 15th suffering from influenza. Discharged from the hospital on March 1st, Victor embarked for Canada aboard the SS Olympic on the 17th.
After the war Victor returned to the family farm, found on the 1921 Canada census with his parents and an adopted brother Werner. He later worked for a number of years with the Department of Highways out of Kenora, living on Wharf Street in nearby Keewatin.
Victor died on 29 September 1965 in Deer Lodge Hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba. At the time of his death he was survived by his sister Jenny Mounk of Keewatin. Victor is interred in the Lake of the Woods Cemetery in Kenora.
