Hamill, Harold Edward

Harold Edward Hamill was born 03 October 1897 in Rat Portage (Kenora), Ontario. He was the oldest son of Edward Hamill and Amy Jennings. His siblings were Lillian, Kathleen, William and Charles. His father died in 1909, the same year that Charles was born.

Harold  received his education in Kenora and entered service with the CPR in 1916 working as a locomotive fireman.

On 03 May 1918 Harold was conscripted  in Port Arthur, Ontario and assigned to the 1st Depot Battalion, Manitoba Regiment. By August of 1918 he was in England where he was transferred to the 8th  Battalion in November. In January of 1919 Harold was assigned to the #3 Infantry Works Company in the field. By June 1919 he was back in England. His discharge came in Winnipeg on 05 July 1919 due to demobilization.

Harold returned to Kenora after the war and the 1921 census shows him working as a labourer in a lumber mill.  He regained employment with the CPR. During slack times prior to WW2 he was an engineer  in a tug boat on Lake of the Woods. In 1944 he was promoted to Locomotive Engineer for the CPR, a position he held until his retirement  on 04 May 1957.

On 07 September 1925 Harold married Elizabeth Lang in  Kenora.   They had one son, James.

Harold died on 08 April 1958 and is buried in Lake of the Woods Cemetery, Kenora.
