Jones, Andrew

Andrew Jones was born in Dailly, Ayrshire, Scotland.   His parents were Andrew (Sr) Jones and Janet Anderson Gibson.   His father was a coal miner in Scotland.   Andrew was the oldest of at least 3 children; his siblings being Elizabeth and Rosina. The family was living in Scotland according to the census taken in 1901.

Andrew immigrated to Keewatin, Ontario, Canada with his father, mother and sister Elizabeth, with no mention of sister Rosina.   They left Glasgow, Scotland on board the ship Grampian and arrived in Quebec on May 6, 1913.   Their destination is listed as Keewatin.   His father, Andrew (Sr) is listed as a merchant at the time of immigration.   Andrew (Jr) is 20 years old.

On 12 February, 1916 Andrew enlisted with the 94th battalion in Kenora, Ontario.   He listed his occupation as farmer.   After training in Kenora and Port Arthur Andrew embarked for England aboard the SS Olympic on 28 June 1916.   When he arrived in Liverpool he was transferred to the 43rd Battalion and sent to France in August of 1916.   At the battle of Vimy Ridge, on 17 April 1917, Andrew received a gunshot wound that fractured the ulna in his left arm.   He was invalided back to England and received treatment in hospital in Colchester until the end of June 1917.   In September of 1917 Andrew was attached to the Canadian Forestry Corps in Carlisle, Scotland.   By July of 1918 he was an Acting Corporal in District 52 of the CFC. Andrew was granted permission to marry in November of 1918. At Gretna, Dumfries-shire, Scotland he married Janet Pollock. In May of 1919 Andrew returned to Canada and was discharged due to demobilization.

Andrew and his bride set up residence in Keewatin after the war.   They had two children – Janet (b. 1919) and Andrew (b. 1921). They divorced in 1930 and Andrew married Clementine Tremblay on 11 March, 1932. Andrew first worked at the flour mill in Keewatin. Then he worked for the Department of Highways as a powder man and then for the Town of Kenora, also as a powder man.

Andrew died at the veterans Deer Lodge Hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba on August 6, 1975.   He is buried in the Lake of the Woods Cemetery, Kenora, Ontario in the east section of the History Haven Block.   Andrew is also remembered as a Corporal in the C.E.F. on a second stone laid on the ground.
