The son of George Lindsay and Caroline Johnson, Herbert Roy Lindsay was born on 3 January 1891 in Napanee, Ontario. His father George was a fisherman in the Belleville/Napanee area although they may also have had a small farm. Herbert had three older siblings, George, Lilly, and Grace. Sadly, it appears that Lilly, struck by lightning, died in 1896. He also had a younger brother, Ernest. Around 1909 the family relocated to northwestern Ontario, farming in the Umbach/Pellatt area a few kilometres northwest of Kenora. The 1911 census found Herbert and Ernest listed with their parents on the farm as well as with their sister Grace and her husband Ernest Watts in Kenora. Both census entries indicated that they were working as labourers at a local sawmill.
With the onset of conscription in the latter part of the war, Herbert signed his recruitment paper on 11 November 1917 and had his medical examination the following January in Winnipeg. His occupation was given as farmer in Pellatt, his date of birth as 3 January 1892, and his mother Caroline in Pellatt as next of kin. During his medical examination it was noted that he had defective vision. As a Private with the 1st Depot Battalion Manitoba Regiment and following a conditional leave, Herbert was discharged on 27 July 1918 in Winnipeg, struck off strength on return to Registrar’s Records. His brother Ernest also signed his recruitment paper on 11 November 1917 and served in Canada with the 5th Battalion Canadian Garrison Regiment.
On 20 August 1923, in Kenora, Herbert married Lenora Maud Hicks. Born in 1904 in Napanee, Lenora was the daughter of William Henry Hicks and Hannah Davy. After living in Winnipeg for a few years, her family also farmed in the Umbach/Pellatt area. Herbert and Lenora gave birth to four children, Lenora, Albert, Donald, and Herbert. Over the years Herbert worked as a carpenter with Lindstrom and Nilson in Kenora and the Ontario Minnesota Pulp and Paper Company. Self employed, he retired in 1963.
Herbert died on 24 December 1966 in the Kenora General Hospital. At the time of his death he was survived by his wife Lenora (Lena), daughter Lenora (Harry) Green of nearby Norman, sons Bert of Kenora, Donald of Calgary, and Herbert of Wabigoon as well as thirteen grandchildren and one great granddaughter. Also surviving were his brother Ernest of Kenora and sister Grace Watts of Shannonville, Ontario. He was predeceased by his mother Caroline in 1926 and father George in 1931, both in Kenora, and his brother George. Herbert’s wife Lenora died on 24 March 1969 in Kenora and is interred with Herbert in the Lake of the Woods Cemetery, Kenora.
