George Albert Maluish was born in Rat Portage (Kenora), Ontario on 25 February 1894. His parents came from two different worlds. Ernest Duncan Maluish arrived from England and settled in Rat Portage in 1880. His mother Katharina Frankenberger arrived from Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany in 1887. The two met at a local boarding house and married in the Anglican Church in 1888. Parents to nine children between 1888 and 1903, they were Rat Portage pioneers.
George enlisted with the 52nd Battalion in Kenora on January 6, 1915 and his brother Harry followed on 7 June 1915. Harry actually shipped out first with his brother following a few months later. Both brothers served in France and Belgium and suffered life long disabilities because of the time they spent in the European theatre. While serving with the 4th Battalion on 8 July 1916, near Ypres, George was severely wounded in the left side when a bullet penetrated his left lung. He clung to life and eventually started to improve. Harry was subsequently shot in the arm and both men were in hospital in England within a few months of each other. As George recovered he was shipped home to Kenora. He was unable to return to service and suffered a life long battle of pain caused by his injury. Bullet fragments would migrate to the surface of his skin throughout his life causing extreme discomfort. When speaking with his Grand Daughter Robin she shared the pain he suffered from his wounds as well as the anguish he felt from the time he spent overseas.
George went on to have a successful career with the CPR. He married Violet Ward in 1918 and they had four children. Their three sons all served in WW2, only two returned home after the war. George Douglas (Bucky) Maluish lost his life when he was shot down over England while he was returning to base after a bombing run. George and Violet lived their entire marriage at 610 Second Street South. This home was located on the original homestead of his parents. George passed away on 03 March 1985 and is buried at the Lake of the Woods Cemetery in Kenora, Ontario.
