George Hiram Page was born in Marlow Bucks, England and moved with his family to Canada in 1908.
On 17 August, 1915 George enlisted for WW1 in Kenora, Ontario. He arrived in England on 8 December 1915, and landed in France on 20 February 1916. He received a Good Conduct badge on 28 September 1917, and was promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal on 6 September 1918. He received Lewis gun training and spent a short time with the ‘K’ Special Co.
On 27 August 1918 he received gun shot wounds to his right forearm and side, during the Second Battles of Arras. He always credited a caring nurse for ensuring that he received treatment as, some did not think he would be able to recover from his injuries. His condition did improve and he was sent to a military hospital in Hampstead in October, then returned to Canada for a further 12 months of treatment at the Manitoba Military Hospital in December of 1918. George was discharged on 2 December 1919.
Following his return home and his recovery, George worked as a timber cruiser and fire ranger for the Ontario Forestry Branch. He later started working for the Fire Department of the Town of Kenora. Due to the damage that his lungs had sustained he was unable to handle that work and he soon transferred to the water pumping station where he worked until his retirement in 1964.
George was married to Violet Grace Skeet on 14 December 1926. They had eight children and lived in Kenora for the remainder of their lives.
George died on 23 June 1976 and is buried in Lake of the Woods Cemetery, Kenora, Ontario.
