Private Roy Oscar Ross enlisted in Port Arthur, Ontario on 30 April 1915. According to his service file he was born on 22 November 1884 in the town of Kenora, Ontario, which was known as Rat Portage at the time. He was married, an engineer and next of kin was his wife, Mrs. E. Ross, in Cumberland, Vancouver Island, British Columbia.
Roy signed up with the 52nd (New Ontario) Battalion, which had been organized the previous fall. His unit trained in Port Arthur and in June 1915 they were joined by recruits from other towns in northwestern Ontario, including Kenora. The 52nd Battalion sailed for England in November 1915 but Roy wasn’t with them. He had been struck off strength as a deserter on 25 August in Port Arthur.
Nothing further is known about Roy.
